Roughing It is a book of semi-autobiographical travel literature written by American humorist Mark Twain. It was written during 1870–71 and published in 1872 as a prequel to his first book The Innocents Abroad (1869). This book tells of Twain's adventures prior to his pleasure cruise related in Innocents Abroad. Roughing It follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861–1867. After a brief stint as a Confederate cavalry militiaman (not included in the account), he joined his brother Orion Clemens, who had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory, on a stagecoach journey west. Twain consulted his brother's diary to refresh his memory and borrowed heavily from his active imagination for many stories in the book. Roughing It illustrates many of Twain's early adventures, including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation, a journey to the Kingdom of Hawaii, and his beginnings as a writer. In this memoir, readers can see examples of Twain's rough-hewn humor, which would become a staple of his writing in his later books, such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1876), and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889).

Roughing It Black Illustrated Classics Bonus Free Audiobook edition by Mark Twain Antonio Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A stagecoach journey with his brother to Nevada for 3 month trip which turns into a 6 year epic adventure. It's Mark Twain on an extended camping trip, so how can this bad? All of his travelogues are gems and this is no exception. Lake Tahoe, gold and silver mining, caught in a blinding blizzard and more.
It's Mark Twain so of course there will be great writing with humour. I loved the stagecoach ride from Missouri to Nevada, not so much his failed mining experiences in Nevada, San Francisco was interesting and Hawaii was fabulous. As this was all written first hand in around 1870, it is of course historically fascinating and great to be observed by such a master, but it did drag in the middle mining chapters that went on far too long.
A great value and highly entertaining - except for the author's occasional overlong descriptions of this and that. Otherwise, Clemens' descriptions are really rich and hilarious, both of the American West, and his journey around the Mediterranean. Interestingly, Twain, the US literary hero and creator of Jim and Huck and Tom, show very clearly how US people have been extremely racist and mad for the gun forever. It's worth the read for that realization alone.
The only Mark Twain I ever read was Huck Finn and Ton Sawyer, there was humor there but it was subtle and vague to a 9 year old boy. Along comes "Roughing It" very funny! Now I get Mark Twain the American Humorist! Very good! The Edition however SUCKS an there are NO illustrations and with every new chapter you get a page that looks like you started over to the beginning in the book, very confusing.
What can you say about America’s treasured writer Mark Twain? Roughing It is a great book, an eyewitness account of pre-Civil War Nevada and the West, written with Twain’s eye for observation and detail and humorous style. His verbal imagery is vivid the flooding Carson River, the Washoe Zephyr, the fire that burned what is now Tahoe National Forest. Today, you can stand in Gold Hill or Virginia City, and get a sense of what times were like when Twain and his brother rode a stagecoach from Missouri to the Nevada Territory. Roughing It and Huckleberry Finn are his best writings. I used to carry the paper book with me on motorcycle trips, but thanks to , have it handy almost everywhere I go, when there's cell reception.
I'm a big Mark Twain fan and read this book many years ago. Probably before you were born -). I decided to read it again and I'm glad I did. One of the greatest American humorists in full flight.
I loved this book. Amazing adventures of Mark Twain as a very young man in the Old West - mostly Nevada and California - plus Hawaii. Very interesting to read descriptions from 150 years ago of places I know today. And funny! That guy was hilarious.

I liked this book more than I did the better-known Life on the Mississippi.
